Learning To Listen: Insight Meditation Group
7:00pm – 8:15pm, Sundays @
$5-$10, Sliding Scale Donation
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to this sitting group. If we have not yet met, my name is Jonathan Reynolds. This sitting group is composed of new and old students to meditation – each wishing to practice and embody the twin principles of wisdom and compassion in their life. Whatever the reason for your curiosity, again, welcome.
The intention of this group is three-fold: it is an introduction to the practice of insight (vipassana) meditation in the Buddhist tradition; it is a place for experienced meditators to sit regularly in community - ongoing friends and friendships will surely grow around this group's regularity; and lastly, these meditations are an opportunity to pause, reflect, and to notice the passing of our previous week and weekend, and to recharge for the days and week to come.
Our time together will be guided primarily by Buddhism's Four Foundations of Mindfulness – body, sensations, thoughts/emotions, and dharmas. At times our meditations will also be informed by Buddhism's Brahma Viharas (Heavenly Abodes) - loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity. You need not be a Buddhist to attend, as these practices appear in one form or another in all great wisdom traditions.
The evening begins with some instruction in the practice of seated meditation – this helps to inform our 40-minute sit. Following the meditation there is an open forum for reflection, sharing, and questions. Also, if you find it difficult to sit on the floor, please bring what you think you may need: meditation cushion (zafu), meditation bench, or chair.
Let us sit for a bit.

Fall Session: October 18 through December 13, 2009 Winter Session: January 24 through March 21, 2010 Traditionally, the practice of yoga and the art of teaching yoga were learned under the tutelage of a single teacher, or at most a small number of teachers over many years. This is still the best way to gain a deep, consistent, and coherent understanding of these subtle and complex matters. I want to offer you an opportunity to embark on such a journey. The Yoga Teacher Mentoring Program is an intensive eight-week course, held at Turtle Island Yoga, designed to train you in the practical skills of teaching yoga. This program is suitable for students who have not yet taken a yoga teacher-training course and want to learn the practical, everyday craft of teaching effectively, and for those already teaching who would like to deepen their understanding, enhance their classroom presence, and sharpen their teaching skills. During the eight-week program, you will learn: · How to sequence a class so that it is safe, interesting, and effective. · How to demonstrate poses to enhance your student’s learning. · How to modify the poses for individual student’s needs. · How to use props for instructional and therapeutic purposes. · How to make respectful, compassionate hands-on adjustments that work. Course Requirements: · Take one public class per week with Tony. · Assist in one public class per week with Tony. · Complete a packet of course-related readings. · Participate in one group meeting every two weeks for 2 hours, devoted to hands-on peer teaching and discussions of the reading materials. All required coursework except the cost of the reading materials is included in the course fee of $600 per session. You may take as many sessions as you want; the reading materials/discussion will be different each time; plus ongoing consultation and support is a proven and powerful way to rapidly increase your teaching abilities. Once you’ve completed one session, additional sessions can be taken for $300. To register, send a letter or resume outlining your yoga experience to: tonybriggs108@sbcglobal.net, or for more information, call Tony at 415.488.1930.
Yoga for the Athlete Workshops
with Dario Fredrick

Specific poses will be practiced to encourage alignment, balance and openness. While each workshop has a specific focus, they are appropriate for everyone, athletes and non-athletes alike. Increased freedom of movement and restorative practices translate to improved recovery from daily activities and a greater sense of balance within.
About Turtle Island Yoga
Turtle Island teachers are committed to their own ongoing yoga practice, and to furthering their education. They extend their commitment, experience and fresh outlook to their students.
What Does Turtle Island mean? In many myths around the world, it is the turtle, which supports the entire cosmos on its back and is the foundation of the manifest universe we all experience. This vision is shared by both Hindu and some Native American mythic traditions. Our intention at Turtle Island Yoga is to present an age-old practice useful to new-world students.
